Arc Flash Studies

Arc flash awareness has increased in the last couple of years. Welcon Technologies is able to determine arc flash incident energies, advise appropriate PPE requirements and determine arc flash boundaries to ensure the safety of your workforce. We can also advise arc flash mitigation strategies. All arc flash studies are fully compliant with IEEE 1584 and NFPA-70E.

Fault Studies

Unusual operating conditions, heavy loadings and ageing equipment can all impact power system reliability.  We will calculate the fault levels in your power system and determine whether your switchgear is adequately rated. All Fault Studies meet the requirements of statutory authorities and are fully compliant with Australian Standard AS 3851.

Protection Studies

To ensure equipment is adequately protected against overload, short circuit and earth-fault, we can determine appropriate settings for your protection devices including relays, adjustable air circuit breakers and adjustable moulded case circuit breakers.  Time-Current curves showing the operating characteristics of all protection devices from a motor or a distribution board right back to the supply authorities' protection.

Loadflow, Voltage Drop & Motor Starting

Loadflow and Voltage Drop Studies are vital, to review equipment loadings under different operating situations.  A thorough loadflow investigation also enables us to solve your power factor liability problems.  And if you're planning plant expansions or modifications, our loadflow and motor starting study capabilities will enable us to determine feasibility of your proposed plans.

Harmonic Studies

We will help you meet supply authority requirements and ensure harmonic overloading does not occur, by determining the voltage and current harmonic distortion at any point in your power system.  In addition, we can minimise harmonics that are present by selecting appropriate filter designs and locations, and validate the computer model using measurements taken on-site.

Power Factor Studies

It makes good business sense to analyse the economic benefits of power factor correction in terms of reduced utility charges and increased system capacity against the costs of installing and maintaining power factor correction devices.  With our help, you will be equipped to meet Power Authority requirements, and ensure maximum utilisation of electrical components.

Energy Consumption Audits & Assessments

Earth Grid Design

Whenever a new switchyard or substation is built an adequate earth grid should be included in the design.  Using a special purpose instrument and the latest software we can provide a complete earth grid design solution.  We can take earth resistivity measurements, determine an appropriate earth grid design, and take earth resistance and step and touch potential measurements on the completed earth grid to ensure it meets the design criteria.  The design can be made compliant with either IEEE Standard 80 or IEC Standard 490.

Transient and Switching Analysis

Welcon engineers have an in-depth understanding of transient disturbances and the resulting stress effects on power systems.  Backed by many years of experience, our team conducts in-depth investigations of transient overvoltages and details recommendations for remedies.
